Our Approach to Access
At the Lightstand Project, access is a design principle—not an afterthought.
Our Community-Engaged Training Programs are built to serve parents, community members, educators, youth, and lifelong learners without assuming degrees, credentials, or professional titles.
We offer multiple access pathways so people can participate based on interest and relevance, not ability to pay.
Access Tiers
1. Free Community Learning Opportunities
These offerings are free to participants.
Our free community learning opportunities are designed for:
- Parents and caregivers supporting their children’s learning and development
- Community members seeking practical tools for engagement and advocacy
- Lifelong learners who enjoy learning for personal, civic, or cultural reasons
Examples include:
- Community workshops
- Parent engagement trainings
- Youth and intergenerational learning sessions
No cost. No credentials required. Open to the community.
2. Sponsor-Funded Training Cohorts
Some training programs are supported by sponsors, allowing participants to enroll at no cost.
These cohorts may include:
- Educators and school-affiliated staff
- Nonprofit and faith-based staff or volunteers
- Community partners implementing the Lightstand Project programs
Participation criteria (when applicable) are based on program goals, not academic status.
3. Partner-Sponsored Trainings
Organizations may sponsor trainings for their communities, staff, or constituents.
This model is commonly used by:
- Schools and school districts
- Churches and faith-based organizations
- Nonprofits and community groups
Participants typically attend at no cost, with the sponsoring organization covering program expenses.
4. Fee-Based Professional Development
Some offerings are fee-based and designed specifically for institutions or professionals seeking structured training, professional development, or continuing education.
This pathway primarily serves:
- Teachers and educators
- Tutors and mentors
- Organizational staff
Fees support:
- Facilitator time
- Curriculum and materials
- Program delivery and evaluation
Certificates may be available where appropriate, but they are optional and never required to participate in learning.
About Certificates
Certificates are offered only when useful or required for professional contexts.
The certificates do the following:
- Document participation or completion
- Support continuing education or professional development needs
- Do not determine eligibility for training
Many participants choose to engage without pursuing a certificate.
What We Do Not Require
- College degrees
- Professional titles
- Academic enrollment
- Prior experience

How Pricing Is Determined
Pricing and access decisions are guided by:
- Community education best practices
- Adult and community learning models
- Cost-recovery for program sustainability
- Equity and accessibility commitments
