When You’re Not Sure What Comes Next

There are points in writing where the next step is not immediately visible. A piece may feel partially complete, but the direction forward is unclear, or the ending does not yet take shape in a way that feels settled. Many writers notice that this kind of uncertainty can interrupt the flow of writing, creating a pause that is difficult to move through. It may feel as though something is missing, even if it is not clear what that something is.

In some contexts, this pause is part of how writing unfolds. It can signal that the piece is still developing, or that additional time is needed for ideas to become more fully formed. Writers often find that what comes next is not always determined in a single moment. It may emerge gradually, through continued engagement with the writing, or through stepping away and returning with a different perspective. Not knowing what comes next does not necessarily mean the writing has stalled. It may mean that the writing is still in process.

Reflective Question:
What happens when you allow space for what comes next to emerge over time?
